As some of you know already (from our 24/7 chat), I think I have given up on FreeNAS for my home file sharing server. Here is a couple reasons why:
1. Saving some electricity by not running an entire computer 24/7
2. OS somehow got corrupt, and couldn't restore things back to normal
Even though the OS ended up somehow corrupt, I was able to recreate the RAID5, but.... I couldn't access the share over the network from any computer (Linux, Windows, OS X). The only thing I could do in order to copy over my valuable data from the RAID5 onto some extra HDDs I had laying around was to SSH into the FreeNAS box. From Windows I used WinSCP to easily/quickly copy over all of the data. Thank goodness for that!
After copying over all of the data, I wanted to try and get the FreeNAS working again like it should. I removed the SMB services, unmounted the drive, removed the array, etc.... Re-setup everything (including initializing the array - wiping all data), and still couldn't access the file share over the network.
In the end, I went downstairs, hit the power button, and remoted into my Windows Server box (running on ESXi - alongside of my IPCOP box running inside of ESXi). Installed a couple HDDs into the ESXi box, assigned them to the Windows Server, and setup a software RAID1 for testing. File share permissions are a cinch, and I'm down to running 1 server 24/7 now!
When I can, I want to purchase a couple large HDDs to run as a RAID1 with this setup. This way, if I ever run into problems (either with a physical HDD, or the OS), I could just pop a drive out, plug it into any of my running systems, and more than likely access the data without any trouble.
In the end, I still like FreeNAS, I just don't want to run it at home at the moment. One recommendation I would give to anyone, is make regular backups of your FreeNAS configuration.

Where the heck is the 'any' key?

My PC-Addicts sticker is in the attic collecting dust. I would like a small logo sticker but unfortunately chris-d made providing for his family and fixing his house priority over US PC ADDICTS!
Im still intel and used to be AMD. AMD ruled the Single core world but just cant seem to keep up in the multi core world. I think AMD has a better price point for upper mid range cpu currently.
